Frappe-toi le cœur raconte l'histoire de Marie, une femme belle et narcissique qui trouve sa joie dans la jalousie des autres, jusqu'à ce que la naissance de sa propre fille, Diane, la transforme en une mère jalouse et cruelle envers sa progéniture. Le roman explore les ravages de ce rejet maternel à travers les yeux de Diane, qui grandit en essayant de comprendre l'amour absent de sa mère, et se spécialise en cardiologie, en lien avec le titre inspiré de Musset.
