Special Screening of L’Étranger

We are pleased to offer our students the opportunity to attend a special screening of L’Étranger, directed by François Ozon, in partnership with the UPP Cinema and Dr Simon Kemp (University of Oxford), author of  Oxford Literature Companions: L'Etranger: study guide for AS/A Level. The event will take place on the 12th of May, at 5.15pm, at the Ultimate Picture Palace in Oxford.

Dr Simon Kemp will introduce the film, and the screening will be followed by a Q&A session, offering valuable insights into Albert Camus’s iconic novel L’Étranger.“Aujourd'hui, maman est morte. Ou peut-être hier, je ne sais pas.” — these are some of the most famous opening lines in Francophone literature and mark the beginning of one of the seminal works of existentialist fiction.

François Ozon’s adaptation has been described as "Une relecture contemporaine sublime et pertinente du classique d'Albert Camus qui offre un rôle complexe et saisissant à Benjamin Voisin.” L'adaptation de L'Étranger d'Albert Camus par François Ozon (sortie 2025) relate, dans l'Alger des années 30, l'histoire de Meursault, un homme indifférent à la mort de sa mère et aux conventions sociales. Après avoir tué un homme sur une plage, il est condamné à mort, moins pour son crime que pour son manque de sensibilité
